Sinopterus youngi NOTE: The shape and attachment of the wing in this drawing is likely incorrect. Described late in 2002, Sinopterus is the first tapejarid found outside of Brazil, and also the most complete specimen from this family. The skull of Sinopterus is very similar to Tapejara, with a bony crest on he snout and another protruding from behind. However, many pterosaurs are now known to have more elaborate non-bony crests anchored on the preserved portions of the skull. Other Tapejarids like Tupandactylus imperator are prime examples of this, as their keratinous crests extend far above the bone. Being a more primitive member of the family, I've given Sinopterus a much less pronounced extended crest. Sinopterus is found in the early Cretaceous of Liaoning, China. Its wingspan was about 1.1 meters (4ft.). |
