Saurornitholestes, a close North American relative of
Velociraptor, roamed Canada during the early Cretaceous and was a
contemporary of such dinosaurs as Struthiomimus and
Einiosaurus. In this sketch (part of an aborted larger scene which
was to include Struthiomimus and Montanazhdarcho), a
Saurornitholestes spreads its wings and struts forward in an attempt
to scare a larger bird away from the dead pterosaur at its feet. The
plumage I use here is based on a combination of an eagle and the
puff-tail specimen of Cryptovolans,
but is also consistent with some of the later microraptorian fossil
finds. To the right is the
Saurornitholestes I drew earlier as part of my
Einiosaurus picture. |
