First named in 2001, Khaan is known from two excellently preserved skeletons. Oviraptorid skulls are notorious for a wide range of variation, and traditionally any un-crested oviraptors were referred to the genus Ingenia. However, skeletal differences, especially in the hand, show that Khaan is distinct, though very similar, to its un-crested relatives like Ingenia and Conchoraptor. Like all maniraptors Khaan had feathers, though the retention of scales near the beak are speculative. Also speculative is the deflated throat pouch - my other Khaan drawing shows how I imagine such a structure could have been developed for a mating display.
